A Hormone Imbalance: The Root Of A Variety Of Health Problems

February 8th, 2010

Women have more problems with a hormone imbalance than men because of the way their bodies are made. A woman’s normal cycle is 28 days. Estrogen is produced in the first part of the cycle, followed by ovulation and then in the last part of the cycle, progesterone is produced to prepare the body in the event that she conceives.

If the woman is not pregnant, she has her period, and the process of hormone fabrication begins all over again. This happens on a monthly basis. Some women do not ovulate which means estrogen is produced, but progesterone is not. The only time progesterone is produced is in preparation to receive the egg after ovulation. The lack of progesterone causes an imbalance to occur.

As a woman ages, the same thing happens. Less progesterone is produced in the body, while more estrogen builds up. Some girls start this problem with their first period, or a woman may start it after she has her first baby. Age and having a tubal ligation can, also, cause the hormones to become unbalanced. Once this starts it has a domino on the woman’s health.

The brain is the first thing that is affected by an imbalance of these two hormones. It swells, and women will notice tenderness in their breasts, their hands swell, they have mood swings or they may have headaches. The thyroid can, also, be affected by too much estrogen. The thyroid causes the adrenal glands to stress out, and that causes adrenal fatigue. Once the adrenal glands are exhausted, the woman may experience such symptoms as depression, fatigue, weight gain, sleep problems and the inability to think clearly along with many other health problems.

Anytime there is an imbalance of hormones, the entire immune system is affected. This causes the woman’s fitness level to decrease. She no longer feels like exercising or worrying about her health. She just tries to survive each day. Sometimes it gets so bad she can hardly function.

Interestingly, most women do not see their doctors about this problem because they do not think there is anything wrong. They think it is a problem of just being overworked from trying to care for their husband, home and children and juggle their job at the same time. They, also, have a tendency to think that all women experience the same thing.

Taking natural progesterone is the only way a woman can balance out her hormones when her estrogen is too high. If she does not do this, her fitness level drops even more. She will begin to feel better and have more energy once the amount of progesterone in the body is at the same level as that of estrogen. Her family will consider her to be a different person.

When a woman begins to use the recommended doses of natural progesterone cream, she will not notice a change immediately. It will take anywhere from three to four months for the hormones to become balanced again. She should be able to tell that the hormones are balancing because she will feel better, she will be able to think clearer, the mood swings will go away along with the depression and she will feel like doing things again.

Any woman who is experiencing these symptoms should see her doctor. If not, she should at least begin using a natural progesterone cream, and see if the symptoms begin to ease up after a couple of months. If they don’t begin to respond, the symptoms may be caused by something more serious.

Excessive estrogen in the blood affects the brain, causing it to swell. The most common problems a female faces are breast tenderness, mood swings and even weight gain. We’ve got the inside scoop on how to lose weight with fat burning foods

Information On Infertility Stress

January 26th, 2010

Infertility is one of the most stressful situations that any couple must deal with. Even treatments for it can contribute to the stress that the couple goes through. In addition, the irony is that couples that realize that they themselves are stressed can further worsen their infertility thanks to this realization!

But what are some of the factors behind infertility stress? What causes it?

Firstly, it can stem from being initially diagnosed as being infertile in the first place. Many couples try having intercourse for some months or at least a year (of course, unsuccessfully) before they get frustrated and seek the advice of a fertility specialist. And when said specialist diagnoses either partner – or both in some cases – as being infertile, one or both could very well end up feeling depressed and inadequate.

Secondly, should the couple decide to undergo infertility treatments, doing so can further add to their stress. Such treatments can prove exceedingly and prohibitively expensive depending on the treatments required. (Patients, though, may be able to avail of financing options and fertility insurance if they qualify for it.)

And the process itself – having to go in and out of doctors’ waiting rooms and hospitals, among other places, waiting with bated breath for results, and so on and so forth – can also contribute to stress immensely.

Thirdly, even the act of lovemaking itself may contribute to the stress. Many couples may not be able to get past the fact that they are unable to bear children through “the usual way”, through making love, and this can make things very hard for them because if they are unable to consummate the sexual act, they may have to make recourse to more medical procedures.

In addition, sex may feel forced and even something of a chore for the couple, since they would have to be doing it according to a schedule and in order to produce children instead of simply enjoying one another and/or giving each other pleasure.

In addition, men will feel emasculated and feel that they are responsible if they are unable to produce babies with their wives. Having to undergo fertility treatments may be even more demeaning for them. And since men have to produce semen in doctors’ offices, learn that they might have low sperm count or have erectile problems, all these can prove extremely embarrassing to them.

It is extremely important to consider how the couple responds to such stress in the first place. Some can simply take it in stride and be positive even in the face of potential failure; others can be negative right at the outset even if the future for them might not be so bleak, and immediately contemplate having to adopt children while agonizing over how unfair things seem to be, and so on and so forth. This can result in a drastic lowering of self-esteem for couples and individuals.

Infertility can cause many couples to go through extreme strain. Many couples buckle under this strain, and many of them end up breaking up. There are some who end up stronger couples after going through this experience.

How To Deal With Your Sick Newborn

January 15th, 2010

Dealing with a sick baby is often the most scary and stressful moment a parent can ever faced. If you could only take away the pain that your baby is experiencing, you will in no doubt do it; but we all know that a baby getting sick is unavoidable, and the least that we can do is to do everything within our capabilities to help make our babies feel better.

If your baby develops a fever, is not interested in feeding,is vomiting, has watery diarrhea, and develops a skin rash, the best thing to do is to contact your pediatrician. It is strongly advisable that you should be alert at all times for these symptoms because your baby is still not capable of speaking and muttering of what he is feeling; you should observe your baby at all times for any physical and behavioral changes. You should always be prepared in case of an emergency.

How to know if it’s a fever already?

A temperature of 37.5 degrees celcius is considered a slight fever, but body temperature typically varies during the day. It is usually lowest in the morning, and highest in the afternoon. Normal temperature also differ from one person to another. Babies usually have a higher normal temperature than adults.

Observe your baby’s temperature daily. If he has persistent high temperature, or if his temperature is erratic (rising and dropping for 3 consecutive days), you should consult your pediatrician because your baby has a fever.

How to safely treat a fever?

After consulting your pediatrician, there are some steps you can do to hep bring the fever down:

Medication: Follow promptly your pediatrician’s advice concerning fever medications. Do not alter or change it for it would result to prolonged infection.

Fluids: Make sure your baby gets enough water and fluids (milk) everyday. This will help prevent dehydration and cool the body.

Warm him up: Most of the times, babies with fever also get the chills. Use a baby blanket for warmth and hold your baby for extra warmth and comfort. Remember not to put your baby in the crib with a blanket, for it could lead to suffocation.

Cool off: Keep your baby at rest in loose, light cotton clothing, and give him a lukewarm sponge bath to help lower his body temperature.

It is always important to monitor your baby closely. Never disregard even a slight change in your baby. Whenever in doubt, it is always best to call your pediatrician immediately.

Children’s Toy Recall Lawyer

January 1st, 2010

Every year thousands of childrens toys are recalled because they cause potentially dangerous problems for parents and their children. The reasons for the recalls vary, but range from lead paint to small parts that can cause a choking hazard and can even go so far as potentially exploding toy batteries!

Even toys that seem harmless, such as magnets, pose a threat to innocent children. Child safety experts recommend that any magnets be completely encased or enclosed within a heavy duty material that kids cannot chew through or break apart.

Parents are now in the midst of sorting through all the toys their children received during the holiday season so it’s important to be mindful when choosing gifts for your children.

Statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicate numerous examples of recalled toys every year and warn parents to be on the lookout. Recent CPSC toy recall examples include Fairies backpack/bag made by Tyrrell Katz which has enough lead levels to cause developmental problems in children who frequently use it.

Another example is the Air Hogs RC Helicopter which contained lithium batteries which can explode or burst into flames if not properly charged or handled. Even Products such as Lip Gloss and Lip Balm in a key chain container made by Girl 2 Girl which contain phthalates. Phthalates were banned as of February 2009 due to the toxic nature of these chemicals which pose a proven long term risk to children’s reproductive and endocrine systems, but they are still in many products for children being sold in the USA. A complete list of recently recalled toys is available at www.cpsc.gov.

If your child was injured as a result of a defective toy, your child’s injuries should not go without recourse. If your child is injured, defective toy lawyer Jeffrey Killino stands ready to respond. Contact him today at www.childinjuryfirm.com or 1-877-875-2927.

Managing The Stress Of Parenthood

December 22nd, 2009

Having children is one of the best things one can experience. However, this does not come for free. Most parent experience a lot of stress caused by the children and the responsibility for them. Since the children are born we rarely have more than a week in a row without worrying about our kids. Unless you really want to go nuts, it is an imperative to learn how to cope with such situation – fast.

First, remember that you should be calm. In situations where you can’t keep yourself together much longer, just walk away and take a few deep breaths. How can you know that the time is right? It’s simple: if you clench your fists and hear your voice rising, the stress attack is on the way. A few minutes more and you will lose your temper unless you go away. Remember that screaming will not do any good, even for you. If you have to scream, do it alone.

Then, never let yourself ignore the problems you have. It is better to meet them head on and find a solution even if this may result in conflict. When you speak your mind, you risk a short quarrel, that’s true. If you decide to ignore the problem and the situation happens again, you will feel your blood pressure rising and your contacts with your children will cool down to the level when you can’t really discuss with them anything.

Create a set of clear rules the children have to follow. Make sure they know about it and they know WHY they should follow them. Then do your best to make sure that the rules are neither broken nor bent. If you suspect that’s something wrong, investigate and act accordingly. Never let the situation get out of control – use whatever means necessary to keep everything in order. There’ll soon be times when children will be able to do everything they want – once they’re adults.

The bottom line: solve the problems as soon as they appear. Do not wait for the to aggravate. If your 15-year-old daughter invites her 20-year-old boyfriend to her room for the first time, you can solve the situation and save yourself a lot of stress with a single joke or inviting your daughter and her boyfriend for a cup of coffee. If it has already happened a few times, you can’t really do anything about it short of a major row – one that may have an ability to split the family apart. So, remember to never let things spin out of control!

Ways to Improve the Physician to Patient Ratio

December 20th, 2009

Since the 1970’s, the physician and patient ratio has been steadily increasing across the country. The result of the increase is much less time spent with patients. This can result in errors in diagnosis, a loss in developing a personal trust with the patient, and patients not receiving proper medical care. However, there are a number of ways to improve physician to patient ratio which will result in more time spent with the patient, more time on preventive care, improving medical care, and developing better relationships between the doctor and patient.

Ways to improve the physician to patient ratio:

1. Arrange for physician schedules to be more consistent. For instance, schedule physicians to work 3 or 4 days consecutively instead of varying ‘off and on’ days. There can often be much time and expense wasted during doctor transitions. As well, a doctor on a set schedule will spend more time with a particular patient.

2. Improve physician communication with staff and other physicians when they are scheduled for their days off. This includes making use of modern technology such as email and websites to update the staff about patients.

3. Talk to physicians about the benefits of maintaining a consistent schedule as it applies to patient care. Engage the physician to come up with a positive and effective agreement to implement a more effective schedule that benefits patient care.

4. Hire more Physician Assistants. These assistants are able to perform many of the tasks normally performed by doctors. This can include diagnosing and prescribing medical treatments, arranging for diagnostic tests, preventive care counseling, writing medical prescriptions, performing physical exams, and much more.

5. Hire more Nurse Practitioners: A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse that acquired additional education and training to carry out some of the tasks normally performed by a doctor. This can include: treating illnesses and injuries such as bandaging, performing physical exams and screening, and diagnostic work.

6. Update hospitals with modern technology to help reduce non patient duties. This can include creating electronic patient files and other important electronic documents and files. Computer orientated patient management can drastically cut down on time away from the patient. Physicians will have more time to focus on their patients.

7. Streamline business operations, particular reducing time dealing with health insurance companies. Physicians can spend many hours each day on the phone with their patients’ health insurance providers. Create a website that allows doctors to enter in a patient’s health plan and identification number which will pull up the patients file containing what treatments and procedures are covered by their insurance provider.

Patients do not always understand why they see a doctor for 5 minutes or why they see several doctors in a family practice setting or during a brief stay in the hospital. Doctors have a lot of added burdens outside the care of their patients. As well, less time with patients can result in poor quality patient care, a higher chance of making a medical error, and even making an error when writing prescriptions. It is important to find and implement measures to increase the physician and patient ratio as it will benefit the medical care industry as well as the doctors and their patients.

What to Look Out For When Deciding On Your Very First Baby Pushchair

December 20th, 2009

After the joy of creating life disappears, you will be hit by price tags that are attached to the huge amount of things you need to acquire. Babies are expensive, but some parents still say they are worth every pound. One of the most expensive items the baby industry will hurt you with is the mighty baby pushchair.

Many parents spend a large amount of time trying out baby pushchairs and reading online reviews. The huge number of options coupled with baby jargon makes the task even tougher

Depending on where you plan to use your baby pushchair you will meet options such as 3 or 4 wheel pushchairs. Whats the difference you say? Well 3 wheel pushchairs will help you navigation off-road. If you will be using your pushchair on nice paved paths, then a 4 wheeler will be more stable and secure.

Where do you plan on storing your pushchair?

Not all parents have a lot of free space on the ground floor. They will often have to life baby pushchairs for storage up one or more flights of stairs. Take this into consideration for the sake of your health.

In the UK, you will not be allowed to check out of the hospital without a car seat. If you do plan on travelling by car regularly, it may save you some money to buy a bundled travel system.

Newborns should not be sitting upright in a baby pushchair within the first 6 or 7 months of being born. Their backs are not strong enough yet to support it. Most pushchairs will have a carrycot that converts into an upright seat. Be sure to check this so you do not have additional costs by having to by another part.

Some parents will argue for pushchairs that face them. They feel it is safer for the baby and makes them feel more secure. Others will disagree completely. This is personal preference really.

Storage space is essential if you plan on doing a lot of shopping by foot. Some baby pushchairs have far more than others.

Parents who live in the UK would be wise to invest in a rain cover and umbrella.

Kids Do Not Need to Be Homesick

December 18th, 2009

Homesickness is a feeling that anyone can feel A strange, new place, even if it is exciting and fun, it is normal to miss home. Separation anxiety or homesickness is a normal part of childhood. It is appropriate, in loving, trusting family. Because your child loves and feels secure with you, separation can be scary and uncomfortable

A Summer Camp provides separation followed by a reunion. Yet, emotionally, it can be difficult to accept especially for children. Early on while adjusting to a new environment and living with new folks, children can get overwhelmed and even scared. Kids who enjoy new adventures and love sleepovers with friends may experience homesickness but usually it is limited.

As parent it’s important not to measure your success by by your child’s homesickness. Don’t feel as if your child is not independent just because your child is having a difficult time adjusting to summer camp. It may be difficult to understand how hard your child finds the first few days at camp. For them often it seems that he will never see you again. Be sure to rationally look at your child’s reactions. Often kids are just looking for a reassuring hug

Homesickness is not about your child loving or trusting you enough, or about her independence or willingness to take risks. Homesickness at Summer camp is a temporary feeling that can be beaten with the support of camp staff. Beating homesickness it is a huge boost to to a childs self-confidence and self esteem. Helping kids get over home sickness is what camps do well. Be Sure to talk to the director if you feel this may be an issue for your child

Should you ever give up? Sure, but don’t act to quickly, unless you feel their is a problem more than just homesickness. Feelings of failure often accompanies those who return early. Sometimes, a child is just not ready for camp even with the best of intentions and efforts on the parents and camp. Especially, when it’s just not a good fit. If, after a week or ten days with the best efforts of your camp, your child is clearly not adjusting, it may be time to bring your camper home. Usually going for a visit does not help the situation.

Talk to the camp director about your decision to to bring your child home. Support your child fully through what they feel is a failure. Reevaluation is best saved for many days after the return. You need to figgure it out with them. Help your child to understand that even though it did not work, he is not a failure. Suggest another sleepaway camp program at another time because you have confidence in him.

A uniqnue First Time at Camp program is offered by Swift Nature Camp. It is designed only for first time campers. This Discovery Camp works because during the 12 days it allows camper to move past homesickness and into self confidence. This program limits campers to about 50 with 6 in a cabin with 2 or 3 staff. All campers are here for their first time, setting a level playing field for all campers. If your child is a little reluctant to leave home, look for a program that is especially designed only for first time campers
